SAFFORD – The Safford Police Department utilized a tactical response vehicle after officers heard a gunshot while responding to a domestic disturbance in a residence in the area of the 200 block of 5th Avenue on Wednesday night.
The incident began at about 9 p.m. when Safford officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a man and woman. As officers arrived, they heard a possible gunshot, and, out of an abundance of caution, additional law enforcement officers were dispatched, and a perimeter was established around the neighborhood.
According to police dispatch notes, a neighbor heard the man and woman arguing and that the man told her to “drop the gun or he will pistol whip her” with it. The couple then went inside the residence to continue their argument, and a gunshot was heard.

The scene stayed that way for nearly two hours until the SPD used a tactical response vehicle to approach the residence and make contact with the occupants. Both occupants were detained, and no injuries to civilians or law enforcement were reported.
Safford Police were assisted at the scene by the Graham County Sheriff’s Office and the Thatcher Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
