Staff Reports
SAN CARLOS APACHE RESERVATION – The Bronco Fire burning on the San Carlos Apache Reservation increased from 800 acres on Tuesday to 3,200 acres as of Wednesday morning, with 0 percent containment.
The fire was started by lightning on Monday, Aug. 3, northeast of Phillips Park.
According to the San Carlos Apache Forest Resources Program – Forestry, the fire has been active on the east side. Fire crews will prep 1400 Road south of Phillips Park today to battle the fire, which is in brushy, steep terrain as it heads east. An Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Team is expected to take over control of the fire on Thursday at 7 a.m. There are currently 100 personnel assigned.
Extreme heat continues to hinder firefighting efforts, and a smoke advisory for San Carlos, Peridot, and the Bylas areas is in effect until 4 p.m. The exposure rate outside within 24 hours should be minimal for bad air quality. However, for those who have respiratory problems, wearing a mask is recommended when going outside. For all people working outside in the area, please stay no longer than 4-5 hours. You must wear a mask to help filter some of the smoke, especially for those individuals with respiratory issues and elders. If possible, it is suggested that you stay inside. The Heat Index causes more extreme effects on people. All schools should limit children’s outdoor time during recess and other activities.

Fire Restrictions: Stage 3. No campfires. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or charcoal fire. Higher elevations remain closed to the public (Route 8 on up, Point of Pines, Drylake, Malay, Hilltop, and Seneca areas). For any questions, contact Wilfred Steele at (928) 475-2326 ext. 352 or 321.
