THATCHER – Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park welcomed 34 youth from the Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley on Monday for an exciting day of science-focused summer fun.

The participants took part in a variety of interactive science activities, including a demonstration with a Van de Graaff generator, where they explored the effects of static electricity—and even enjoyed a few playful zaps.

The kids also created ultraviolet bead bracelets that respond to sunlight. The beads remain clear indoors but transform into rainbow colors when exposed to ultraviolet rays, illustrating the presence of invisible solar energy.

To wrap up the day, everyone climbed aboard the “Polaris” Shuttle Simulator for a virtual tour of the solar system—one of the highlights of the visit.

“We really enjoyed the youth from the Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley,” said Paul Anger, director of EAC Discovery Park. “They were a fun group that really got into the activities and experiments. We love to share our lessons with our local youth.”

EAC Discovery Park is dedicated to public outreach, education, and research. It is open to the public at no charge during the following hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 10 a.m.–noon and 1–3 p.m.
