GLOBE – The burn scar from the 2021 Telegraph Fire and torrential summer rains that same year overtook the Russell Gulch Channel embankment between Besich Boulevard and Hospital Drive, including the box culvert by Southwest Gas.

Along with Gila County Public Works, Gila County Emergency Management applied for — and was granted — just under $4 million from the Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) to construct mitigation improvements within the Russell Gulch Channel.

The improvements include demolition and reconstruction of the box culvert on Hospital Drive, clean-out and removal of sediment that reduced the area for water capacity, and realignment of Russell Gulch with a matting system that will help keep the embankment from eroding.

Demolition is scheduled to begin Monday, March 24. There will be no delays, except that the speed limit through the construction zone is now 15 miles per hour.

Gila County asks the public to drive with special caution through this area, with all the heavy truck traffic traveling to and from the Solitude Buttress.

The construction zone, with detour, will be in place from Monday, March 24, through Friday, June 2.

Gila County greatly appreciates everybody’s cooperation and patience during this time as we look to successfully improve many of the flooding problems of the past in this area.

The Russell Gulch Channel Improvement Project will allow this drainage area to handle more than three times the hydrologic capacity than it could before.
