Duncan girls among top four in region

TRI-COUNTIES – Final regular-season home games for different class levels are scheduled this week.

Duncan hosts 2A South Region Willcox, Morenci hosts Santa Rita, Miami hosts San Carlos on Monday, Feb. 2; Fort Thomas hosts San Manuel on Tuesday, Feb. 3; Thatcher hosts Sabino and Safford hosts Tanque Verde on Feb. 5; and Fort Thomas hosts the 1A East Region tourney pitting the top four teams on Thursday-Friday, Feb. 5-6.

This week (Feb. 2-7)

In the 1A East Region, Fort Thomas hosts San Manuel on Feb. 3; and Fort Thomas hosts the 1A East Region tourney on Thursday-Friday, Feb. 5-6.

Non-region pairings include Duncan hosting 2A South Region Willcox and Valley Lutheran hosting 2A Central Region Phoenix Madison Highland Prep on Feb. 2; and Duncan visiting 1A South Region Elfrida Valley Union on Feb. 4.

For the 2A East Region, San Carlos visits Miami, and Gilbert Classical hosts Chandler Prep on Feb. 2; Pima hosts San Tan Charter, Lincoln Prep hosts Chandler Prep, and Leading Edge visits Gilbert Classical on Feb. 5.

Duncan – 46, Ray – 18 (Jan. 30)

An opportunity to score a pair of free throws went by the wayside for the visiting Bearcats. Instead, a scoreless initial eight minutes followed and Duncan led 8-0 with four different Wildkats contributing points.

Ray trailed 0-12 before sophomore Jillian Figueroa scored on 1-2 free throws and a 15-point deficit was in place before senior Josselyn Lechuga added a field goal, but Duncan led 21-3 at halftime.

The deficit was 23, 8-31, when an And-1 by Lechuga allowed the Bearcats to reach double figures with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. Duncan led 32-12 heading into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Duncan totaled 18 field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 9-18 free throws compared to three field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 11-19 free throws by Ray.

Sophomore Haley Bigler netted 12 points on six field goals and junior Lily Ford 11 on four field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 2-4 free throws.  Junior Paisley Patton added eight points, junior Heidi Miller and freshman   Emma Harris six apiece, junior Sofia Harris two, and freshman Dusty Rodriguez one.

Four of seven Bearcats scored, Figueroa had seven points, Lechuga six, sophomore Krishel Sims four, and senior Lucy Madala one.

Benson – 53, Morenci – 44 (Jan. 27)

The visiting Bobcats broke a 36-36 three-quarters deadlock with a 17-8 fourth quarter outing, with sophomore Angel Pfiefer contributing seven points, sophomore Karris Taylor six, and junior Adalie Lewis four.

Morenci led 10-8 after the first quarter and trailed 16-23 at halftime. A 20-13 third quarter Morenci effort, punctuated by an Adriana Carbajal 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining and a Rozlyn Funari field goal 26 seconds later, knotted the score to begin the fourth quarter.

For the game, Morenci totaled 18 field goals (three 3-pointers) plus 5-11 free throws compared to 18 field goals (five 3-pointers) plus 12-28 free throws by Benson.

Seniors Adriana Carbajal, senior Rozlyn Funari, and junior Tiara Jones netted 12 points apiece, on five field goals (two 3-pointers), five field goals plus 2-4 free throws, and five field goals plus 2-5 free throws, respectively. Junior Mayeli Salazar added five points, and sophomore Jaylianna Guzzo three.

For Benson, Taylor had18 points on six field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 4-15free throws, and Pfiefer had 14 on four field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 4-4 free throws. Senior Coco Farrand added eight points, Adalie Lewis six, freshman Paige Lewis five, and freshman Madison Jones two.

Duncan – 46, Hayden – 18 (Jan. 27)

The host Wildkats yielded a point in the initial eight minutes to lead 9-1 heading into the second quarter, six in the next eight minutes to lead 17-7 at halftime, and 35-9 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hayden reached double figures in the final eight minutes as Duncan had a 6-5 outing for the final 46-18 score.

On the evening, Duncan totaled 17 field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 6-14 free throws versus five field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 3-9 free throws by Hayden.

Patton netted 13 points on six field goals plus 1-2 free throws, and Miller 10 on three field goals plus 4-4 free throws. Ford added seven points, Bigler five, and Sofia Harris, Emma Harris, and Rodriguez two each.

Four Lobos scored with sophomore Azalea Aringhard getting five points, junior Yvana Waddell four, senior Rya Lagunas three, and senior Trinity Collier two.

The Mia Carter-coached Bulldogs are competing in the 7-member 3A South Region with the Thatcher Eagles along with the Tucson schools Empire Ravens, Palo Verde Magnet Titans, Pusch Ridge Christian Lions, Sabino Sabercats, and Tanque Verde Hawks.
