THATCHER — Restoring order to their home turf with a dominant ground attack, the Thatcher Eagles rebounded from a disappointing home loss with an emphatic 49-14 victory over the Florence Gophers on Thursday night at Eastern Arizona College’s John Mickelson Field.
Coming off a lopsided defeat to Benjamin Franklin, the Eagles left little doubt in their bounce-back effort, piling up 387 total yards of offense while controlling the tempo from start to finish.
“We were anxious to rebound after the performance we had last week,” Thatcher head coach Daniel Jones said. “We didn’t feel like we showed up and showed who we were, and so we talked a lot about that. We talked a lot about discovering our passion again, and so I felt better tonight. I felt like we showed up a little bit better.”
Dual-threat quarterback Kase Palmer set the tone early for Thatcher. After fumbling on a heavy hit at the end of a long run—safely recovered by teammate Ritter Smouse—Palmer quickly settled into a rhythm. He tested his arm with a completion to Teagan Damron, who finished as Thatcher’s leading receiver with five catches for 48 yards, before turning back to his legs. Palmer faked a handoff and scampered 13 yards into the end zone, finishing his night with 40 yards rushing and 130 yards passing on 13-of-18 shooting.
Florence responded with resilience. The Gophers sustained a lengthy drive by converting twice on fourth down, including a clutch throw from Brody Ramirez to Vandin Price. Ramirez, who completed 5 of 11 passes for 65 yards and led Florence on the ground with 54 rushing yards, capped the drive on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line by pitching to Dayron Neal, who swept around the left edge to tie the game at 7-7.
The parity was short-lived. Moments later, Thatcher running back Tufden Taylor took a handoff along the sideline, pulled the emergency brake to leave a defender grasping at air, and sprinted 48 yards to the house. Taylor led all rushers with 71 yards on six carries as Thatcher’s six-touchdown ground assault racked up 257 rushing yards on the night.
“We worked hard this week, so it’s refreshing since last week we kind of struggled,” Taylor said of the rebound win. “We’ve been running hard all week. Our line stepped up and did good, so it’s all around a good game.”
Early in the second quarter, Thatcher capitalized on a short field after forcing a turnover on downs at the Florence 31-yard line. Operating out of the Wildcat formation, Taylor faked a handoff and absorbed a heavy hit while shoveling a lateral to Ethan Hayes, who zipped through defenders for a touchdown to push the lead to 21-7.
Taylor’s impact extended to defense as well. Shortly after breaking up a deep pass, he intercepted a Ramirez throw and returned it 51 yards to the end zone. However, the score was negated when officials flagged an illegal assist under the new “tush push” rule. Florence’s defense then staved off a late goal-line push to keep the halftime deficit at 28-7, but Thatcher outscored the Gophers 42-7 after the initial tie.
Florence showed life early in the third quarter when Ramirez scrambled to set up the Gophers inside the Thatcher 20. Neal, who scored both of Florence’s touchdowns, finished the drive two plays later with a 1-yard plunge to cut the margin to 28-14. Chance Sauls contributed 29 rushing yards for the Gophers, but Florence was ultimately held to 187 yards of total offense.
That was as close as Florence would get. Thatcher immediately answered as Josh Jones capped a methodical drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Jones struck again early in the fourth quarter, finding a seam on the right side and going untouched for a 24-yard touchdown run to balloon the lead to 42-14. Jones ended his night with 67 yards and two scores on 10 carries.
Defensively, Thatcher dominated the final period behind stops from Ryzer Jacques and Willie Dunklin. After a 30-yard burst by Zayden Gonzales set up the Eagles inside the red zone, Dunklin capped the scoring with a hard-nosed touchdown run to trigger the Arizona high school mercy-rule running clock at 49-14.
For the Eagles, the victory offered both a clean slate and a template for the weeks ahead.
“It’s just gaining our confidence back, you know,” Taylor said regarding the team’s mindset. “Just keep going, just keep going forward… Just a great football team. Love all the players. Just a great community.”
While pleased with the progress, Coach Jones knows his squad still has work to do as the season unfolds.
“I think we ran the ball real well, but we’re still missing some assignments that are real important,” Jones said. “It’s good to get on the field and get that monkey off our back a little bit… We still have things to learn, but I think we’re heading in the right direction, so that’s the key.”
Thatcher enters a bye week before traveling to Tucson on Sept. 25 for a regional matchup against Pusch Ridge.
