PHOENIX — The first step in planning your next hunt is to check out the trove of detailed information that’s just a few clicks away on the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s (AZGFD) website.
Start by visiting AZGFD’s Where to Hunt page. Once there, hunters can select the area they wish to hunt (AZGFD divides the state into six geographical regions), then drill down further by choosing Game Management Units (GMUs) located within that region.
Much of the information is updated annually by the department’s wildlife managers — and who better to get the real hunting “scoop” from than the professionals who spend countless hours in the field?
What hunters can expect to find listed for each GMU:
- GMU boundaries and land administration.
- Species information.
- Average number of hunt permit-tags issued over the past five years.
- Climate information (monthly average temperatures, rainfall, snowfall).
- Nearest major cities, towns, campgrounds, gas, food and lodging.
- Brief descriptions of terrain, elevation, and vegetation.
- Government agencies and phone numbers.
- Landscape maps that provide backroad and backcountry detail. Maps use shaded relief and different colors to denote land cover and administrative boundaries.
- Any special notices.
The Hunting in Arizona page is another great resource and your guide to the hunting opportunities our state has to offer.
