SAFFORD — With daily afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected to persist throughout the week, local emergency and public works departments are urging residents to prepare for recurring threats of localized flash flooding, strong wind gusts, lightning, and blowing dust.
To help residents protect their properties, both Graham County and the City of Safford have made sand and sandbags available for public use:
- Graham County Residents: Sand and self-fill sandbags (with a limit of 10 per household) are available at the Graham County Fairgrounds. The filling station is located in the parking lot directly north of the Agriculture Building.
- City of Safford Residents (Self-Fill): Safford residents looking to fill their own sandbags can access sand at the City Mesa Yard office complex located at 405 W. Discovery Park Blvd.
- City of Safford Residents (Pre-made Bags): Safford households can also pick up pre-made sandbags (limited to 5 per household) during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Public Works Office, 220 W. Discovery Park Blvd.
In the event of active emergency flooding within city limits, Safford residents are instructed to call the Public Works on-call emergency line at (928) 965-9668.
