MORENCI – Entertainment, food, games, and good company awaited partakers in festively decorated DeGracia Park on May 2. Numerous area residents attended the four-hour late-afternoon community event.

Mariachi Corona de Morenci, along with colorful south-of-the-border folkloric dancers and lively local Zumba dancers, was on hand to provide entertainment. Chihuahua dog races and games for all ages, including a shaded Corn Hole. Food vendors for a variety of tastes were on hand as well.

The fifth of May celebration, or Cinco de Mayo, commemorates Mexico’s 1862 victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla, despite being outnumbered and outgunned. It is a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, not Independence Day, which community organizers and leaders held over the weekend. The Independence Day, getting out of the Spanish rule beginning in 1810, is celebrated on Sept. 16, often referred to as the battle cry “Grito de Dolores.” It would be 11 years before Mexico gained independence.
