Thatcher hosts quarterfinal match on Tuesday

Safford, Pima bow out in first round

THATCHER – The No. 4 Thatcher Eagles (11-1 seeding, rating) host the No. 5 Scottsdale Rancho Solano Prep Mustangs (11-1, 12.8208) on Tuesday, May 5. It is a quarterfinal round pairing.

Thatcher (11-1 seeding) was a combined 66-6 in seeding singles matches and 33-3 in doubles. The Eagles went 1-2 in singles and 5-2 in doubles during the state individual tourneys.

Rancho Solano Prep (11-1) was a combined 61-11 in seeding singles and 32-4 in doubles. The Mustangs went 2-2 in singles and 4-1 in doubles during the individual tourneys.

Section I Individual State Tourney qualifiers numbered 18, including two Thatcher singles, a Benson singles, and a Miami singles, along with two Thatcher doubles, two Duncan doubles, a Safford doubles, a Pima doubles, and a Globe doubles.

Division III State Team Tourney Quarterfinals (May 5)

The state team tourney quarterfinals have top seed Yuma Catholic (14-0 seeding, 18.6524 rating) hosting No. 8 Tucson’s The Gregory School (10-2, 9.2314), and No. 4 Thatcher (11-1, 13.2970) hosting No. 5 Scottsdale Rancho Solano Prep (11-1, 12.8208) in the upper bracket.

The lower bracket has No. 3 Phoenix Country Day School (11-2, 13.5498) hosting No. 6 Scottsdale Cicero Prep (10-1, 12.2647) and No. 2 Tucson Pusch Ridge Christian (12-2, 14.6275) hosting No. 10 Florence (11-3, 5.9188).

Rancho Solano Prep (11-1) was 61-11 in singles and 32-4 in doubles.

Singles top seed sophomore Maya Litt was 10-1, No. 2 freshman Noemie Delacollette 7-3, No. 3 sophomore Chloe Okrasinki 6-0, No. 4 sophomore Sydney Hedges 12-0, No. 5 sophomore Aleya Chahal 11-0, No. 6 sophomore Jacqueline Schatzberg 10-1, sophomore Olivia Griffith 3-2, freshman Gabby Girodroux 1-3, and freshman Amiya Kwatra 1-1.

Thatcher (11-1) was 66-6 in singles and 33-3 in doubles.

Singles top seed senior Sophie Haynie was 9-1, No. 2 junior Sarah Sampson 11-1, No. 3 senior Leah Bryce 11-1, No. 4 senior Katie Bastian 11-1, No. 5 junior Jaiden Wakefield 10-1, No. 6 senior Savanna Kartchner 9-1, junior Ella Goodman 3-0, and sophomore Ruby Ellerman 2-0.

Division III State Singles Tourney Championship (May 4)

Ninth-ranked Cicero Prep senior Hailey Bostwick meets No. 2 Scottsdale Prep senior Noelle Oh for the title at the Glendale Paseo Racquet Center on Monday, May 4, with a 5 p.m. start.

Bostwick defeated Tanque Verde freshman Maddie Glickenstein (6-1, 6-0) during the first round and Pusch Ridge junior Noelle Sunukjian (6-1, 6-2) during the second round on May 1, and No. 1 Saint John Paul II sophomore Ania Piatek (6-2 twice) during the quarterfinals and Scottsdale Christian sophomore Angela Soria (6-2 twice) during the semifinals on May 2.

Oh defeated Gilbert Christian senior Sophia Kiesow (6-3, 2-6, 10-7) in the first round and The Gregory School sophomore Layla Lizon (6-0, 6-3) in the second round, and No. 7 Gilbert Classical junior Martina Adsara Criscuolo (6-0, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and No. 6 No. 6 Yuma Catholic freshman Sofia Gallegos (6-3, 6-4) during the semifinals.

Fifth ranked Benson junior Lucy Cooper (1-1) downed Ranch Solano Prep sophomore Sydney Hedges (6-3, 6-4) in the first round and fell to No. 6 Yuma Catholic freshman Sofia Gallegos (6-0 twice) in the second round; Thatcher junior Jaiden Wakefield (1-1) defeated Tombstone senior Abigail Satterfield (6-1 twice) and fell to Gallegos (6-0, 6-1) in the second round.

First round exits were made by Thatcher senior Savanna Kartchner (0-1) to Phoenix Country Day senior Zara Campbell (6-0- twice) and Miami senior Adrina Kaulaity (0-1) to No. 6 Yuma Catholic freshman Sofia Gallegos (6-0 twice).
