SAFFORD — A husband-and-wife team with a long history of community service has been named Pride of Safford.

Carl and Carolyn Vessels received the Pride of Safford Award on Thursday, March 26, in recognition of their devoted service to numerous organizations throughout Graham County.

“Carl and Carolyn have served in so many different capacities with devotion, generosity, and heart,” the nomination stated. “Their steadfast commitment runs deep for the people of this community and is a true reflection as to why Safford is a great place to live, work, and visit.”

Both Carl and Carolyn are longtime members and past presidents of the Safford Lions Club. They also serve together on the board of St. Vincent de Paul and volunteer with Desert Cat Rescue and Sanctuary.

In addition, Carl has served as a chaplain for the local hospice, while Carolyn volunteers to assist the unhoused population in Graham County. Carl previously received the Pride of Safford Award individually, making this joint honor a rare second recognition for the couple.

The Pride of Safford Award honors outstanding contributions to the community. Nominations are currently being accepted in two categories:

  • Pride in Service (for individuals or groups)
  • Pride in Ownership (for businesses or homeowners)

Nominees must live, work, attend school, or perform service in the City of Safford. To submit a nomination, email mruiz@saffordaz.gov.

The Vessels’ recognition highlights the spirit of volunteerism that helps make Safford a stronger community. Their ongoing involvement in service organizations demonstrates the lasting impact that dedicated individuals can have on local causes ranging from animal welfare and health support to aid for those in need.
