The Gila Valley Veterans Services (GVVS) is hosting its 11th annual Veterans Resource Fair on Friday, March 20 at Graham County Fairgrounds Agriculture Building from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All veterans, their families and friends are invited to greet, honor andthank the attending veterans for their service to our country. Thanks to the event sponsors, a free lunch and refreshments will be served to all attendees.
More than 15 state and federal as well as 15 local providers will be present to offer information on VA Benefits, disability claims, social security, housing, Medicare, employment, mental health resources, substance abuse and smoking cessation programs, crisis counseling and suicide prevention, legal aid, death benefits, wellness initiatives, food pantry and clothing bank assistance, pet care food and resources. Rick Larranaga from Trendz will be providing free haircuts.
Veterans Resource Fairs evolved from military stand down days started during the Vietnam War to rotate units out of combat for a couple days of rest and personal care. The Fair’s purpose is to connect the estimated 1750 ( 1 in 23 residents) Graham County veterans along with their families with essential services, visit with and strengthen relationships with other veterans and form informal support groups as they greet and meet.
Without the generous sponsorship of United Way of Graham & Greenlee County, Arizona At Work, Arizona Veterans Stand down Alliance and the Arizona Department Of Veterans’ Services, this annual event would not have the outreach, impact, size or effectiveness.
