Staff Reports

GLOBE – A juvenile was shot early Wednesday morning in the Central Heights area of Globe in what authorities are describing as an isolated incident. The victim later succumbed to his injuries.

19-year-old Deshawn Tarango has been identified as a person of interest. If his whereabouts are known, please notify local law enforcement.

According to a statement from Gila County Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 1:08 a.m. from a male caller who reported that an unknown suspect had shot his friend.

Deputies from the Gila County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Globe Police Department responded to the 5700 block of McKinney Avenue in Central Heights. Upon arrival, they located the victim—a juvenile—who was not breathing. Law enforcement immediately began life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived.

The victim was first transported to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in Globe and later airlifted to a hospital in the Phoenix area for further treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Just before 2 p.m., the juvenile victim succumbed to his injuries.

In an update, Sheriff Shepherd stated that the suspect fled on foot and may have been picked up by an unknown vehicle. (This corrects earlier information that the suspect fled in a white Ram vehicle.)

The Gila County Criminal Investigations Division, the Drug, Gang, and Violent Crime Task Force, and the K9 unit were called to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Sheriff Shepherd thanked the responding agencies, including the Globe and Miami Police Departments, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Tri-City Fire Department, for their assistance.

Sheriff Shepherd and the Gila County Sheriff’s Office offer sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Gila County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division at (928) 402-1872.
