SAFFORD – Despite unseasonably warm weather in the Gila Valley, the Christmas spirit shone brightly during the Graham County Recovery Court’s annual holiday celebration on Monday.
The Recovery Court is a specialized program designed to support individuals battling substance abuse through a structured five-phase approach to sobriety. As Jules Garrison from Graham County Probation explained, participants often need additional guidance alongside standard probation.
“We collaborate closely with treatment providers and nonprofit organizations to equip them with the tools for lasting recovery,” Garrison said.
A highlight of the event was the distribution of gifts to participants with children, courtesy of the Toys for Tots program. Mike Kenehan from Graham County Probation donned a Santa suit to hand out the presents and pose for photos with delighted families.
Former active Marine Sgt. James Tippey, who attended the event, praised the initiative.

“This is something I’m proud to support,” Tippey said, highlighting the community’s exceptional generosity, even amid challenging times. “The way this community steps up for any need that’s out there . . . This community is fantastic. The amount of children that we have here – the amount that everybody steps up – it’s really something beautiful. It brings the spirit of the holiday to reality.”
Graham County Superior Court Judge Michael Peterson welcomed the families and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support their recovery journeys.

Garrison also shared a touching story of one participant who worried about affording gifts this year, only to be surprised by the event’s offerings.
“I am so grateful for everybody who contributes to not only this program but this community,” Garrison said. “I mean, there’s just so much help that helps everybody that struggles in this community.”
