SAFFORD, Ariz. — The southern corridor of 8th Avenue, from 26th Street to Discovery Park Boulevard, has reopened to traffic after a nearly six-month closure for utility enhancements, city officials announced. The roadway, closed since late February, is now fully accessible to drivers, marking the completion of critical infrastructure improvements.

While the reopening brings relief to residents and commuters, the city has advised that future construction activity is planned in the area for the development of the new Mayor Jason Kouts Park. The $5 to $7 million project will transform a 15-acre site at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Discovery Park Boulevard into a vibrant community space.

Preliminary plans for the park include five key amenities designed to cater to a wide range of ages and interests: a splash pad for water play, pickleball courts for sports enthusiasts, inclusive playground equipment areas to ensure accessibility for all, pinch-less zip lines for adventure seekers, and an amphitheater with a potential capacity of up to 500 for community events and performances.
