Section I girls title decided this week

Thatcher, Duncan, and Miami meet for first

DUNCAN – The Chris Cook-coached Thatcher tennis girls (6-0 section) travel to section unbeaten Duncan (4-0) on Tuesday, April 15, and host section unbeaten Miami (4-0 section) on Thursday, April 17.

Section I Matches (April 14-19)

Section matches this week (April 14-19) include Miami hosting Willcox on April 14; Duncan hosting Thatcher, Miami hosting Safford, Willcox hosting Benson, and Morenci hosting Pima on April 15; Thatcher hosting Miami, Safford hosting Morenci, Benson hosting Pima, and Willcox hosting Duncan on April 17; and Globe hosting Willcox at Miami on April 18. 

Non-region pairings include Thatcher at Tucson’s The Gregory School, Pima at Tombstone on April 14, and Duncan at Tucson Andrada Polytechnic on April 16.

Duncan has an eight-member team: seniors Emily Kempton and Camille Miller, junior Emily Evans, sophomores Roxanne Donaldson, Lily Ford, MacKenzie Jones, and Heidi Miller, and freshman Elvalie Vigil.

The section second place Shannon Kempton-coached Wildkats are 46-4 in singles (82-6 sets) and 24-1 in doubles.

Top seed Kempton is 8-1 in singles and 15-2 in sets played, No. 2 Camille Miller (9-0, 17-0 sets), No. 3 Ford (5-3, 11-4 sets), No. 4 Evans (8-0, 14-0 sets), No. 5 Heidi Miller (8-0, 12-0 sets), No. 6 Jones (4-0, 7-0 sets), and Vigil (4-0, 6-0 sets).

The No. 1 duo of Kempton – Camille Miller is 9-0, No. 2 Ford – Evans 7-1, and No. 3 Heidi Miller – Jones 5-0, and Heidi Miller – Vigil 3-0.

No. 26 Miami Vandals (5-2)

Miami has a seven-member team: senior Veronica Rodriguez, juniors Adrina Kaulaity, Alexis Moody, and Daisy Pacheco, sophomore Sienna Egitto, and freshmen Lilliana Light and Evelyn Ramos.

Top seed Kaulaity is 6-1 in singles and 11-4 in sets played, No. 2 Pacheco (4-2, 14-0 sets), No. 3 Moody (4-3, 7-5 sets), No. 4 Ramos (2-5, 4-10 sets), No. 5 Light (5-0, 9-0 sets), No. 6 Rodriguez (3-3, 6-4 sets), and Egitto (0-1, 0-2 sets).

The section third place Joy Wilson-coached Vandals are 21-15 in singles (51-25 sets) and 12-7 in doubles.

The No. 1 duo of Kaulaity – Pacheco is 5-1, No. 2 Moody – Ramos 4-2, and No. 3 Light – Rodriguez 0-3, Kaulaity – Moody 1-0, Ramos – Light 1-0, and Light – Egitto 1-1.

Thatcher has an eight-member team with seniors Emily Sampson, Audrey Smith, Kala Turley, and Cambria Wakefield; juniors Kastie Bastian, Sophia Haynie, and Savanah Kartchner; and sophomore Sarah Sampson.

Top seed Haynie is 9-2 in singles and 16-5 in sets played, No. 2 Turley (7-3, 13-6 sets), No. 3 Emily Sampson (8-3, 15-6 sets), No. 4 Smith (11-0, 20-0 sets), No. 5 Wakefield (11-0, 20-0 sets), No. 6 Sarah Sampson (9-0, 17-0 sets), and Kartchner (2-0, 3-0 sets).

The No. 1 duo of Haynie – Emily Sampson is 9-2, No. 2 Turley – Smith 9-1, No. 3 Wakefield – Sarah Sampson (8-1), Smith – Kartchner 1-0, and Kartchner – Sarah Sampson 1-0.
