THATCHER — More than 600 students and teachers from area schools attended an exceptional matinee performance of Anastasia at Eastern Arizona College on April 3, 2025, gaining firsthand insight into what it takes to bring a professional musical production to life.
The student matinee, part of a four-day run of Anastasia at EAC, concluded with an engaging talk-back session featuring the show’s cast and creative team. Students could ask questions about the production process and hear directly from the performers and crew.
The questions asked were, “How do you memorize your lines?” “When do rehearsals begin — and how long do they take?” and “How old do you have to be to be in this production?” Students were also curious about character development and staying in character onstage, how microphones work, what the audition process is like, how performers protect their voices, and the most extensive cast the actors have ever worked with.
“This event gave students a chance not only to enjoy live theatre but to engage with the people who bring it to life,” said Jeff Skiba, director of Anastasia and EAC’s associate professor of theatre. “Opportunities like this spark creativity and deepen appreciation for the performing arts.”
In addition to the 600 students who attended the matinee, nearly 2,500 community members experienced Anastasia over its four-day run, held April 2–5. The production earned strong praise for its powerful performances, breathtaking choreography, and mix of classic songs from the original film and new music written for the stage. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause at every performance, highlighting the cast and crew’s dedication and talent.
“Seeing a vision come alive onstage is always a marvelous thing,” Skiba said. “The hard work and effort of our cast, crew, and designers have coalesced into one amazing piece of art. I could not be more grateful to have the team that I have to bring excellent shows to our stages here in Thatcher, continuing a legacy of excellence at EAC.”
