Thatcher girls atop Section I with 4-0 record

MORENCI – The Brenda Street-coached No. 40 Morenci (1-6 seeding, minus 8.3741 rating) tennis girls host No. 13 Duncan (7-0, 5.4556) on Thursday, April 10. But first, the Wildcats travel to No. 35 Willcox (2-3, minus 6.5410) on Tuesday, April 8.

This week (April 7-12) in section pairings, No. 35 Willcox (2-3, minus 6.5410) hosts No. 17 Safford (3-2, 0.5860) and No. 30 Miami (3-2, minus 2.4862) hosts No. 50 Globe (0-6, minus 15.6457) on Monday, April 7; No. 10 Thatcher hosts No. 38 Pima (1-4, minus 7.4441) and Safford hosts No. 36 Benson (3-4, minus 6.8648) on April 8; Safford hosts Thatcher and Pima hosts Willcox on April 10.

Thatcher has an 8-member team with seniors Emily Sampson, Audrey Smith, Kala Turley, and Cambria Wakefield; juniors Kastie Bastian, Sophia Haynie, and Savanah Kartchner; and sophomore Sarah Sampson.

Top seed Haynie is 7-2 in singles and 12-5 in sets played, No. 2 Turley (6-3, 11-6 sets), No. 3 Emily Sampson (6-3, 11-6 sets), No. 4 Smith (9-0, 16-0 sets), No. 5 Wakefield (9-0, 16-0 sets), No. 6 Sarah Sampson (7-0, 13-0 sets), and Kartchner (2-0, 3-0 sets).

Top seed Kempton is 6-1 in singles and 12-2 in sets played, No. 2 Camille Miller (7-0, 14-0 sets), No. 3 Ford (5-2, 11-4 sets), No. 4 Evans (7-0, 13-0 sets), No. 5 Heidi Miller (7-0, 12-0 sets), No. 6 Jones (4-0, 7-0 sets), and Vigil (3-0, 5-0 sets).
