THATCHER — Since its founding in 1888, Eastern Arizona College (EAC) has remained a cornerstone of education and economic vitality in the Gila Valley. The past year has seen significant accomplishments, with rising enrollment and expanded workforce program offerings to substantial economic impact and facility renovations. As the College invests in new initiatives and commits to addressing challenges, it is positioned to drive even greater positive change for the community. Financial Stability and Resource Management
The Arizona Auditor General’s recently completed audit underscores EAC’s prudent financial management, with revenues significantly outpacing expenses. Over the past decade, EAC has seen operating revenues increase by 73% and non-operating revenues by 30%, leading to a 40% overall revenue growth since President Todd Haynie took office. During the same period, the College maintained disciplined spending with operating expenses rising by just 20%. The College has set aside reserves for future growth rather than relying on bonded debt. Despite saved resources, state spending caps limit funding for critical initiatives.
EAC’s Enrollment is Steadily Increasing
EAC’s enrollment has risen by nearly 16% since 2020. This enrollment growth supports local jobs and creates a steady pipeline of graduates in our workforce. The growth for non-local students alone has contributed $9.3 million to the local economy and supports 188 jobs.
Driving Economic Impact: A $228.7 Million Annual Contribution to the Region
EAC is the largest economic driver in Graham County, generating $228.7 million annually and supporting 3,006 jobs. With 90% of its funding from state and external sources, the College contributes more in tax revenue than it consumes. Alumni add $184.4 million to the local economy, highlighting education’s role in long-term wealth creation.
EAC Lowers Tax Rate for Graham County Residents for Sixth Consecutive Year
For the sixth year in a row, EAC has lowered the property tax rate for Graham County residents, decreasing it from $3.34 in 2020 to $2.46 in 2025. The latest 14-cent reduction reflects EAC’s commitment to balancing affordability with quality education.
Radiologic Technology Program Experiences Strong Demand and Career Success
Launched in 2022, EAC’s Radiologic Technology program has consistently reached full enrollment. The program’s hands-on training prepares students for in-demand healthcare careers, addressing the allied health shortage while allowing students to stay in the Gila Valley.
New Soccer Programs Enhance Student Experience
EAC introduced the Gila Valley’s first collegiate soccer teams, enhancing school pride, wellness, and community engagement. The teams attract local and international athletes, boosting the economy and strengthening community ties.
New Cosmetology and Healthcare Buildings: Expanding Capacity and Partnerships
EAC is building a state-of-the-art facility to expand its Cosmetology Program and partner with Mount Graham Regional Medical Center on a medical clinic. The new building will nearly double the cosmetology enrollment capacity from 70 to 130 students, meeting regional demand.
Grant-funded investment in Local Jobs and Education
EAC secured $31.1 million in grants from 2021 to 2024, including nearly $7 million in 2023-2024 with 40 jobs and boosting the local economy. These funds help provide quality education and create jobs without burdening taxpayers.
Two New Bachelor’s Degrees Meet Community Demand
To meet local workforce needs, EAC introduced two bachelor’s degree programs in 2024: Health Sciences and Music Education. The programs drew over 400 applicants in their first year, offering affordable pathways to high-demand careers and reducing the need for students to pursue education in costlier urban areas.
Enhancing Campus Facilities in a Fiscally Responsible Manner
Eastern Arizona College modernized its campus with renovations to Nellie Lee Hall, Mark Allen Hall, the Residence Towers, and Wesley Taylor Hall, prioritizing cost-effective upgrades over new construction. These efforts boosted housing occupancy from 63% three years ago to full capacity today.
Building Workforce Partnerships to Launch the EAC Diesel Technician Program
EAC’s Diesel Technician Program, developed with Freeport-McMoRan and Empire Southwest, reached full capacity in its first semester. The program, backed by a $100,000 grant, offers hands-on training for high-paying careers in mining and transportation.
Rededication of Mark Allen Hall and Reopening of the Activities Center
In 2024, EAC celebrated the 60-year rededication of Mark Allen Hall and the reopening of the Gherald L. Hoopes Jr. Activities Center. These renovations reflect the College’s commitment to modernizing the campus while ensuring financial responsibility.
Expanding Career Opportunities with the New Career Service Center
Eastern Arizona College officially opened its new Career Service Center, located on the second floor of the Alumni Library, which serves as a one-stop shop for students to gain career readiness skills and for local businesses to mentor, train, and hire EAC students.
Scholarships Fuel Student Success
This year, over 250 EAC students received scholarships totaling more than $500,000. In 2023, the EAC Foundation raised $1.1 million to support scholarships and educational programs, easing financial burdens for students.
EAC Celebrates Indigenous Culture at Native American Festival
In partnership with the Southeast Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, EAC hosted the Native American Festival at John Mickelson Field. The event drew over 600 attendees and featured a vibrant parade, performances, and traditional foods and crafts.
EAC Nursing Program Recognized for Excellence
EAC’s Nursing Program was once again ranked Arizona’s top nursing school by RegisteredNursing.org, outperforming much larger institutions. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the program continues to produce skilled nurses who meet the state’s healthcare needs.
EAC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
In partnership with the Eastern Arizona Hispanic Foundation, EAC celebrated its 10th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month with a kickoff celebration and a dinner and cultural event. A car show is planned for later in the month.
President Todd Haynie was Appointed to the WICHE Commission
EAC President Todd Haynie was appointed to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education by Arizona’s Governor, boosting EAC’s regional profile and expanding access to higher education across the West.
Addressing the Student Housing Shortage Challenge
EAC is facing a housing shortage, with on-campus residences at full capacity and limited local options. The College is exploring partnerships with local property owners to address the demand and support future growth.
Expanding Facilities to Meet Program Growth
EAC’s rapid program growth in Allied Health and Industrial Education has outpaced available space. The College is exploring expansion options to continue delivering practical education in high-demand fields.
