SAFFORD – The saying goes, “there is no honor among thieves.” Recently, scammers went after a woman who had run afoul of the law and defrauded her of her bail payment.
According to a Safford Police report, the woman said she was contacted by someone who purported to be her bail bondsman. She said the caller informed her that she needed to pay her entire bond of $1,200 or the bond would be invalid.
The woman was instructed to send the money through Western Union to a location in California, even though the phone number used to contact the woman came up with a local area code.
After sending the money, the woman thought it was strange they requested the funds be sent to California since her bondsman is in Safford. She then got in contact with her bondsman and they called the number the scammers previously called from but only received a tart response and a quick disconnect.
The officer informed the victim that someone might have hacked her bondsman’s computer and encouraged her to contact Western Union.
