BYLAS – A brush fire closed U.S. Highway 70 in Bylas at about 4:25 p.m. Friday.

The closure was initially from milepost 291 to milepost 295 on the western edge of Bylas.

According to witness reports, the fire possibly damaged the Bylas Bridge, which has to be inspected by the Arizona Department of Transportation for safety before it can be reopened.

The fire also spread, closing the Calva Road detour and, by about 4 a.m., Saturday, the closure had expanded to milepost 276 near Peridot through milepost 295 at Bylas.

With the expanded closure, ADOT recommended traffic traveling from Safford to Phoenix to utilize I-10 through Tucson.
