The designated home team, the Wildcats, was unable to neutralize the Roughriders’ height advantage. Pima led 15-8 after the first quarter, 25-17 at halftime, and 44-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Ryan Johnson added seven points, Castillo three, and junior Alejandro Espinoza two.
5th Place: Empire – 71, Safford – 45

A 10-14 Safford second-quarter output was not enough to offset a 14-21 first-quarter deficit, resulting in a 35-24 Empire halftime advantage. The Chad Smith-coached Ravens led 55-34 heading into the fourth quarter and went on to amass a 36-21 second-half margin.
For the game, Safford connected on 21 field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 2-6 free throws compared to 29 field goals (nine 3-pointers) plus 4-6 free throws by Empire.

The score was knotted at 6-6 until words were exchanged twice, resulting in technical fouls assessed twice against an Apache Junction coach and a player. Wilson netted all four charity shots with 5:18 left in the opening quarter. Olivar added back-to-back treys 52 seconds apart, and the Prospectors never recovered, trailing by 10, 11-21, after the first quarter; by 21, 17-40, at halftime; and by 30, 22-52, heading into the fourth quarter.

“It was a different style of play than we’re used to,” former Safford and current Apache Junction head coach Troy Powell said. “We had to defend differently. Most of our boys don’t leave the city. By putting ourselves in an uncomfortable situation, we will grow from it.”
For the game, Fort Thomas connected on 19 field goals (nine 3-pointers) plus 9-10 free throws while Apache Junction made 13 field goals (three 3-pointers) plus 1-2 free throws.
